Gwyneth Paltrow: Despite Divorce From Chris Martin, ‘We’re A Family’ | TODAY
Did Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin Actually "Consciously Uncouple?"
The influence of Gwyneth Paltrow on contemporary culture runs the gamut from Oscar-winning films like Shakespeare in Love to esoteric lifestyle advice like pelvic floor exercises on her often-polarizing website, Goop. But none of the posts on Goop have gained as much virality as the announcement of her separation from husband Chris Martin under the banner "Conscious Uncoupling."
But now it appears that Paltrow had nothing to do with the use of now-iconic phrase to describe her separation from the Coldplay singer.
"When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Goop editorial director Elise Loehnen] titled the piece 'Conscious Uncoupling' and I had no idea," Paltrow claims in a new profile by Fast Company.
The almost glamorous spirituality of the phrase ignited Internet debates last March–some mocking the classic "Gwynethism" and others just trying to make sense of what it meant.
Of course, neither Paltrow nor Loehnen coined the term, and the Goop post included a lengthy explanation of "conscious uncoupling" by Dr. Habib Sadeghi and Dr. Sherry Sami. Yet Paltrow knew her website's staff members had to gird their loins amid a barrage of commentary: "When something like that happens, I think everybody is like, 'Oh, shit,'" she said.
