Minecraft: PvP Tips And Tricks #3 - Strafing
How to Strafe in Minecraft PvP
Strafing is a combat technique used in PvP (player versus player). It’s similar to dodging attacks - if your enemy can’t see you, they can’t hit you. Learning to move in an erratic way allows you to dodge projectiles, attack without taking damage, and lock your opponent in combos will allow you to get the upper hand in a fight.
Sneak up on your target.Though you can try just running up to them, attacking them from behind or the side is preferred, since your target won't know what's going on for the first one or two seconds. Avoid walking on loud blocks like gravel or sand in favor of stone.
- Invisibility potions are unreliable since you need to take off your armor and your potion particles can be seen.
- Since they won’t be able to see you if you attack from behind, go for a critical hit. Jump and then attack when you’re falling to deal extra damage. In other situations, this makes it easy for you to be caught in a combo.
Strafe from side to side. When you opponent approaches you, go to the left or right. They will have to turn in your direction and you should go the other way once they do so. It will be harder for them to see you and therefore, you’ll get hit less.
Try circle strafing. This is when you use the left and right buttons along with your forward button to move diagonally around your enemy. Hit them when you are facing their sides or back. When done correctly, you can hit them from behind the entire time and just continue rotating while they can’t see you at all. Move your mouse slowly in the opposite direction of your player to keep it centered on your opponent.
Try W-tapping.Hold down the sprint key ( is the default on PC) and double-tap the key after you hit your enemy. This causes your sprint to reset and your player lurches forward. You’ll do a lot of knockback, making it easy to push your opponent back so that they can’t get any hits off.
Learn to S-tap.Wait for your opponent to hit you and jump while holding the key right before they do. This technique is difficult, but you’ll take huge amounts of knockback if done correctly. This gives you time to drink a potion, move mushroom soup into your hotbar, put on armor you’ve gained, or run away.
Walk through the other player.Humans aren’t solid in multiplayer, so you can go straight through them. This is very disorientating, especially if you combine it with another strafe.
Dodge projectiles.Move from side to side, but not in a fixed pattern. Go to the right for 5 seconds, to the left for 3, backpedal, and add a few jumps. The more unpredictable, the better, although you need to continue moving towards the other player.
QuestionSomeone keeps strafing when I strafe! What do I do?Top AnswererWhen you're both strafing, the winner will be the person with the best aim. Observe what patterns the other person uses when strafing, and try to predict your opponent's movements. When circle-strafing, for example, move your cursor ahead of the person's path so that your hits will land properly. Thanks!
