The Personality Type Diet was created by Robert Kushner, MD, a recognized expert in the field of nutrition and obesity. This weight-loss program takes into account how your personality and lifestyle affect your eating habits. Dr. Kushner's Personality Type Diet has been praised by many experts and endorsed by the Mayo Clinic.

"The Personality Type Diet is not the old diet concept, but rather an integrated, personalized system to help you lose weight and stay on track once you get there," says Erika Schwartz, MD, a life coach in New York City and author of several best-selling books on nutrition and wellness.

How Does the Personality Type Diet Work?

The Personality Type Diet says people tend to fall into distinct personality types — based on how they deal with exercise and dieting, and their coping style — that determine individual dieting habits.

For example, your diet personality type could be a "Mindless Muncher" or a "Nighttime Nibbler." Your exercise personality might be "Hate-to-Move Struggler," and your coping personality might be "Persistent Procrastinator."

You can find out your personality types by taking Dr. Kushner's online questionnaire. Once you have found your personality types, the Personality Type Diet will plan a weight-loss program designed around your individual needs and help you change your habits and behaviors. Visitors to the Web site can access a certain amount of information for free, but for a diet based on individual needs you will have to upgrade to a fee-based membership.

The diet is not restrictive and includes a good balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Weight loss is achieved through healthy diet and exercise. "The diet itself focuses on whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, dried beans, lentils, poultry, lean meats, and soy products," explains dietitian Yvette Quantz, RD, a sports and lifestyle nutritionist at Food Therapy, LLC in Lafayette, La.

The Personality Type Diet: Sample Menu

The Personality Type Diet gives you the recipes you will need to prepare your meals. This sample menu includes three meals and two snacks and contains about 1,365 calories:

  • Breakfast.Start your day with two whole-grain waffles, two slices of turkey bacon, a piece of fruit, and eight ounces of water.
  • Lunch.A fast-food grilled chicken sandwich and a small diet soda. Bring along another piece of fruit and drink 16 ounces of water.
  • Dinner.Follow a recipe for salmon and roasted vegetables and drink 16 ounces of water.
  • Snacks.Snack options include cinnamon graham crackers, sliced strawberries, baby carrots, rye crackers, celery stalks, hummus, and sliced bell pepper.

The Personality Type Diet: Pros

"The big pro for this plan is that [Kushner] emphasizes and understands that there is not one correct option for everyone. This plan really helps people identify what may be the best weight-loss approach for their personality," says Quantz.

Other pros for the Personality Type Diet include:

  • Balance."There are no gimmicks in this diet. It teaches you to make healthy choices and take responsibility for your own nutrition," notes Quantz.
  • Activity emphasis. This diet plan combines exercise with low calories and low fats.
  • Acclaim. The Personality Type Diet has undergone successful trials at Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Wellness Institute in Chicago and has received many other endorsements.
  • Social networking."The Personality Diet offers online-based community support," adds Dr. Schwartz. The weight-loss program allows you to match up with "dieting buddies" that have the same personality type to keep you motivated.

The Personality Type Diet: Cons

As for drawbacks, "It's hard to come up with any negatives for this diet," says Quantz. "I guess if you are looking for a quick fix type of diet, or if you really don't have the time or inclination to shop and prepare meals at home, it could be hard for some people. Others just may not be ready for the effort it takes to change behaviors and lifestyle choices."

The Personality Type Diet: Short and Long-Term Effects

The Personality Type Diet is not built around short-term solutions. This diet asks you to change your habits and behaviors for the long term. Kushner writes that we live in a society that promotes obesity, but we can change our patterns and stay slim and healthy. This requires self-monitoring and sometimes professional help. "The Personality Type Diet is a diet that works because it focuses on more than just losing weight," says Schwartz.

If you want a weight-loss program for a lifetime, the Personality Type Diet is a good place to start.
